Nowadays, people seem to be talking more and more about how to be eco-friendly. The so called ‘green’ way of life seems to be embraced by a growing number of people every year. And the people who actually manage to follow such a lifestyle would like to incorporate it in all aspects of their life so that preserving the health of our planet could be more easily attained. The actual moving process leaves behind plenty of garbage: packing peanuts, plastic wrapping, a huge amount of cardboard boxes and so much more. Unfortunately, all of these are used just once and are tossed into the trash bin. What eco-friendly moving means is to basically use as little moving-related accessories as possible. To reduce the waste.
First off, aim at moving as little items as possible. Don’t try moving your entire household. For example, if there are certain household appliances that you have not been using for quite some time and you will probably never use again, why bother taking them to your new place? After all, the less stuff you take, the less space it will occupy in the moving van and the lighter your cargo will be which will result in the less gas consumption. And this will of course lead to you spending far less money. Which is always good for the family budget. However, these things you decide not to take will be better off either donated or sold at a garage sale. This will add a few extra dollars in your pocket and will help reduce the waste. This idea could be taken to an extreme. How? Well, if you feel like it, you could empty everything out of the fridge and give it away to those in need. The refrigerator’s contents will turn bad anyway by the time you transport them to your new place. Especially if the removal is to take place during the summer.
In most cases, the boxes that are used during the removal are used not more than just once. This increases the amount of junk. Why not look for advertisements that offer already used boxes? Most of them are in good condition and can be used at least once more. Again, you will save money and contribute to not causing any additional waste. You can even rent boxes. There are companies that offer box rental services and you can rent polypropylene moving boxes, which could be used multiple times.
Almost everybody uses bubblewrap for the purpose of securing whatever is being transported. However, bubblewrap is plastic and everybody knows how slow plastic degrades. As an alternative to this kind of plastic wrapping, one can use old newspapers, which can be as effective. They can also be used instead of packing peanuts. Simply crumple the paper into bigger pieces and put among the objects that are already in the moving box. For protecting purposes while transporting, towels and blankets can also do a great job.
However, doing an eco-friendly removal does not end here. The final step after all the packing is done is actually the most important. Choose a moving company that utilizes ‘green’ practices. What’s most important is for them to use vans and trucks that run on ‘biodiesel’, which is far more safe for the environment than regular fuel.
